Get Your 15 Years of Slashdot Shirt (For free, Depending) 146

We'll be sending a passel of shirts to the crowd-sourced parties that we hope you'll get to, and to any artists whose Slashdot logo suggestions we end up selecting. (There are nearly 30 parties planned so far, in places as far-flung as Latvia and Nigeria!) But starting today the limited edition Slashdot anniversary shirt is also available from our brethren and sistren at ThinkGeek (still, for now, serving the same corporate overlord as Slashdot). So if you can't land one of the swag ones (sorry!), you can still swathe yourself in the Slashdot livery, which isn't so different from the colors of the Vogon constructor fleet. We'll only turn 15 once, but a clever T-shirt is forever. Update: 09/21 17:12 GMT by T : If you want to come hang out with the folks who post the stories to Slashdot day-to-day, note that Unknown Lamer is hosting a party in Raleigh, NC, Soulskill and Samzenpus will both be in Ann Arbor, and timothy will be at parties (coffee shops are awesome!) in Houston and Austin.

He secretly called me on his bedside and told me that he has a sum of $12.500.000 (Twelve Million, five hundred thousand dollars) left in a suspense account in a local Bank here in Abidjan, that he used my name as his first Daughter for the next of kin in deposit of the fund.

He also explained to me that it was because of this wealth and some huge amount of money his business associates supposed to balance his from the deal they had that he was poisoned by his business associates, that I should seek for a God fearing foreign partner in a country of my choice where I will transfer this money and use it for investment purpose, (such as real estate management). 1) To hang out at the slashdot party.

      2) To provide a Bank account where this money would be transferred to.

Depending on what side of the IP fence /. is sitting these days, they should post high-res versions of the designs under a Creative Commons license so anybody can print them on clothing of their own choosing (or anything else for that matter).

Hmmm, the shirt seem to come in "XXXL" and "Extra-Virgin", and the store asks for the address of the buyer's mother, in case no one answers the basement door. Talk about targeted marketing! You'd think they'd also sell the shirts in-game in WoW, though ...

Nice try, but no cookie. A 15th birthday is celebrated 15 years after the birth day. The 0th birthday is usually called celebrating birth, which is an entirely different affair. The former celebrates survival over a period of time, the latter celebrates a beginning of existence. So my point still holds.

        • by Hartree ( 191324 )

Birthdays are for living things. For a computer system like slashdot, think of it as filling up the first nibble.

Exactly, celebrating the 0th birthday would be like having an array index start at 0 instead of 1. No real language does that. The first element in any array always starts at 1 [obliquity.com].

          Don't tell the Koreans that.

In Korea, you are age 1 the day you are born. To complicate things further (as with Japan and many other Asian countries) you report the age you are turning in that year (the year being Lunar in Korea and Solar and Japan). So if a child is born on the last day of the year, the very next day that child is already 2.

So if you ever ask a Korean their age, you should ask them for their 'international age' which will be 1 to 2 years lower

      • And now they have to expand the storage from a nybble to a whole byte!

    • Yeah, they should wait until next year for the nice round number.

  • What's involved/required in hosting a party here? Do I have to pay food and drinks for a bunch of people I don't know if I want to get something going?
  • by Anonymous Coward

SlashDot is such an outdated name. They should rename themselves to AtHash.

    • I would think that this day in age it would be more apropos to do iAtHash ... but that gives the allusion of iAssHat ... but still seemingly appropriate.
    • by Jeng ( 926980 )

Slashdot may be an outdated name, but" /. " is rather modern looking.

  • I like shirts that don't explain themselves up front. A shirt that explains the details of the design is rather self-deprecating. You can't have a conversation about the shirt if it already tells any proximal sapiens what it's all about. It's all cool if you get one every year from some charity race to say, "I participated in 1997," but you're generally only going to wear it a few times. If you're seen at the same places with that kind of shirt too often, you're not going to strike up any conversations

Ok, will do......Every time I've seen this topic come up though, someone with 5 digits will show up, then 4, then 3. I had a 5 digit one in the 80,000s and when I couldn't remember the login way back when, I let it slide and re-registered. Now I wish I had tried a little harder.

The email address I used is long gone too; probably a dial-up Earthlink account or something like that.

I remember visiting Slashdot the day that accounts first went live in 1998. I think they went live around 8am CDT, but for some reason I didn't claim my account until around noon. Now I'm forever saddled with a shameful four digit uid. At least it contains the number of the beast. So, that first day there were at least 2665 accounts registered by about noon.

      • Does anyone in the single digits ever post anymore?
