Meta To Introduce Ads On Threads In Early 2025 (yahoo.com) 32

Meta said it plans to introduce advertisements on Threads starting in early 2025, according to a report by The Information (paywalled). GuruFocus reports: Leading the effort -- which is still in its early phases -- is a team inside Instagram's advertising division. One source said Threads is anticipated to let a small number of marketers produce and post material on the platform in January. Threads had about 275 million monthly active users as late as October. During the company's third-quarter earnings call, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg observed that Threads daily sign-up count was about one million, each day.

Ads between posts in a thread are the reason why Yahoo groups became a ghost town. After too many dustballs tumbling in the wind, Yahoo deleted the groups.
    • This just goes to show that Twitter alternatives are big enough now to be a viable competitor and product. Twitter isn't going away since corruption means people are already talking about buying advertising on it in order to cozy up to the incoming administration but I don't think anyone is going to really much hang around Twitter and the advertising buys are just going to be for the sake of bribery. Meanwhile threads and blue sky both continue to gain users and content creators, so much so that blue sky cr

Pretty much all the big social networks have ads between posts, and they are very well alive.
In some case we could say that that there may be some posts between ads.

Intrusive ads certainly make a product less attractive, but by itself it is rarely what kills it. Usually, neglect does.

  • It's getting worse!

  • I wonder if this will be when Bluesky rally takes off.

... until it decides to somehow to the same (can it? Haven't used it since it's from the same guy that gave us Twitter to begin with).

      • He's long gone. Left the board earlier this year after throwing his weight behind the Nostr protocal. Bluesky is putting a lot of emphasis on specifically being ad free and not monetizing user data so it would be quite a betrayal if they went back on that. Not saying that 100% won't happen, the tech world is rife with that kind of double crossing (looking at you google), but it's a far cry from the open rapacious pilfering that goes on over at Meta's properties.
  • Can we get some ads inside the ads? Maybe with ads inside the ads inside the ads? We are, after all, attempting to transition into an advertising based economy. The whole service economy thing didn't really stick, but advertising? Now that's where the real progress can be made. We need more ads. I hope they hurry the hell up with that display fabric so I can have ads on all the clothing items in my closet and on every person around me. Leave no escape for us. I hear up to seventy percent of our vision can b

    • Relax. We're only getting ads on tv, and radio, and in magazines, and in movies, and at ball games, and on buses, milk cartons, and t-shirts, and bananas, and written on the sky. But not in dreams [youtube.com]. We're still safe. For now.

    • I am already there with my range of self-advertising contact lenses. They put a big advert in the centre of your vision at all times. Beat that, ad-blockers! My scheme is absolutely flawless!

To buy a pair, simply follow the instructions on the ad.

Have you worked out the licensing deal for immediate implant in newborns yet?

    • That's like putting a Starbucks inside a Starbucks.

    • Pretty sure that is what facebook is now. Stuff from random sources they think I might be interested in (aka ads) intererrupted by ads.

  • don’t use threads, and won’t ever for sure. These people just don’t get it. Everyone is SICK of data tracking and ads.
  • I had no good reason to use Threads, I now have a very good reason not to use Threads.
  • Ads are poison.

They will kill everything they come into contact with because everyone has had it with how
much they take over every single aspect of our lives if we allow them to.

I'm literally to the point where the most annoying ads have simply become a list of products
I will never buy, regardless of how great the product might be.

It's akin to using your favorite song as your alarm clock music in the morning.
Eventually, you'll come to hate that damn song :P

Oh they've learned alright. They've learned that inundating users with ads makes them money in the short term. When the platform dies they don't care, as they are already infecting the next platform.

  • Dont use any social media, so its makes no difference to me.
Have ad blockers and PiHole etc.
Dumped Netflix, Disney, Prime and removed myself from YouTube.

None of my books have adverts, and public libraries are great too.
  • Simply NOPE !!
  • I am way behind, is that the new twitter, facebook, or myspace?
  • So they plan on discontinuing the service in 2026 then?

Twitter is shedding users by the tens of thousands right now, but these guys think that increasing enshittification is the way to go?
