Updated Slashdot Story Submission Bookmark 48

We recently redesigned the Submission Form to make it (hopefully) a little easier for you to shovel news our way. The new system also will allow you to tag your submissions. A reminder that you can participate in rating stories and filtering spam from the recent submissions page. And by bookmarking this convenient bookmarklet you can submit stories from the comfort of whatever web page you are browsing.

    It's certainly better than the old already aged one, but was the section listbox taken completely off? However I must admit it's probably better to let authors choose it, it was always messy anyway.

    And *I know* this news will get officially buried into bitching about non-working javascript on other sections of slashdot!

      Two points, and a meta:

      First: I've used this form a few times for submissions in the past few weeks, and I miss the section dropdown, also. While I recognize the elegance of using tags, what's missing is an indication of which tags are going to result in which story icons.

      Second: Once a tag is entered, I don't see a way to delete it (in case I change my mind or make an error). If there's a way to delete a tag, it's not obvious. Tag deletion isn't a necessity on the front page, but when I'm composing

      • You can remove a tag you've entered with the "-" sign. (e.g. -yro or -games or -whatcouldpossiblygowrong)

        I'll see if we can get a legend or something for equating tags to topic icons.

        Lastly: how is the parent redundant? It's the first on-topic post?

        Several possibilities -- a clueless mod; a moderator on sopssa's freaks list; a moderator seeing a similar comment further down that is more succinct, informative, or interesting; a mistake (likely remedied by the moderator by posting a comment); or some unknown foible of the moderator. There's a sig that reads something to the order of "there, fixed that for you" will be modded down.

      I don't have much problems with other sections, but I can no longer submit stories on my lunch break at work or at the library at all -- it's completely broken in IE6. Sure, "you can submit stories from your journal", but although 1/3 of the stories I've submitted via the submissions page have been posted, not a single one I've submitted via my journal have.     Can you believe it's been 12 years on since Slashdot came into being? 12 years on and we're still getting major updates.

    I gotta hand it to you guys, even when things are working, you're finding new and interesting ways to update the site. I guess this is one of the reasons it's still relevant and popular.

    I noticed this a while ago when I went to post a story. Mostly, it's rather nice, but I do miss one feature:

    Can it be made so that my link points to something other than my email address? I used to change it on every submission to point to my website, and actually I'd like to set that as the default.

    Was there a reason that choice was removed, or was it an unintended effect/feature without priority?

      Click your name in the submission and a box should appear that allows you to change it from your entered e-mail address to whatever you want.

      I am having a problem with the javascript bookmarklet in Firefox 3.5.2 where it is not recognizing me as logged in when I use the bookmarklet to popup the window and submit the story. And then when I click "Log In" it takes me to a blank submission page with no data (but I am logged in). Is this a known bug? Shouldn't it grab that information and log in status from a cookie or something when I'm logged in in another tab? Aside from that, it looks really slick and I'm excited I won't have to switch between windows so much while paraphrasing articles! Well done!

  • All of this is nice. When are you going to allow meta-moderation again? It doesn't work for me. At all. Probably because I'm not using the fancy dynamic display that destroys CPUs and takes minutes to accomplish anything.

    I'd like to meta-mod, seriously. So how about it?

  • I find this tag to be offensive, seeing as how I'm not wearing pants.

    The one thing that I miss in the new submission system is the list of Accepted, Rejected, and Pending stories after a submission is made.

    Can we get the list of Accepted, Rejected, and Pending stories back?

    Otherwise the new system is fine although I didn't know how to go about submitting a story under a different name or how to add a link to a web site instead of an email address until I read the post above by eldavojohn.

    You may want to add that information to your FAQ.

    I quit submitting things to Slashdot when it became apparent it would take a minor miracle to get anything accepted, while others routinely get pushed to the front of the queue, even on the same news items. Slashdot has moved away from it's early user-centric concept into a commercial news aggregator where only major players have easy submission access.

      • I think not. I'm a long-time reader and submitter, and it's been my experience throughout that it doesn't matter how I work it, it just doesn't happen. And then I see others getting in with the same item. Now, sometimes I can admit they might have had it first, or had a better submission. But every single time? Not likely. I'd be bound to get one in just on random chance. If you watch the submitters, there are a clear few who seem to get the lion's share of the postings. In any case, it's just no lo

    Given the meta-topic... I'll ask this here:

    Ever since Slashdot went to the "2.0" (was it?) interface where you can ajax collapse or expand posts within the normal page... I haven't ever gotten mod points.

    I have "Willing to Moderate" checked, and "Good karma", but I haven't received mod points for a long long time.

      I'm not sure what the algorithm is for determining who gets mod points. I went through a period where I got new mod points on almost a daily basis for like 6 months, then I didn't get any for more than 3 years. About 6 months ago, I got 5 mod points, and none since then. I've been at Excellent karma the entire time. The frequency with which I post or meta-moderate, both of which have varied wildly over the years, doesn't seem to have any easily discernible effect.

      Not that any of that helps you at all

      • I think you have to read on slashdot for some days in a row to get mod points ... someone less lazy than I could dig it up from the help pages.

          Sad to say, I read EVERY day, and my karma is excellent, and hasn't varied in 10 years. I think karma is, ya know, karma. Mod points are down to comment strength. After all, they are contributed by fellow posters.

    • I might be getting your mod points - I rarely visit Slashdot, but my mod points are refreshed every three days, whether I use them or not.

      I basically have infinite mod points.

      If you're a prolific poster you don't get mod points, even with excellent karma. Which makes sense to me; if you're a prolific poster with excellent karma, moderating takes time away from posting, and if your karma is excellent you have a lot of highly moderated comments.

    Oh come on now. Some tech news site updates its submissions link, and it gets a front page story? Really? Slow news day or what.

  • On this form, titles are truncated to a set length. However, the title field itself does not impose a length limit, so the truncation can slip-by the unsuspecting submitter and result in unwittingly truncated titles [slashdot.org].

  • Any chance this will also fix lost/ignored submissions? Like some pending since September 23?

  • Metamods have been broken ever since going to 2.0. Are you going to fix that ?
