Over the course of October, we marked each day of our 15th anniversary month with a different reader-submitted graphic, instead of the usual Slashdot logo. (Thanks to all the artists who participated, whether or not your submission made it to the page: to keep it to one each day, we had to reluctantly cull a lot of great ones.) Now that all the selected graphics have had their day in the sun, we'd like your help in figuring out which one of the selected artists will receive a Nexus 7 tablet (in addition to one of our anniversary T-shirts). Take a look at the current poll and cast your vote. We've listed a handful of favorites as poll options, but feel free to pick the "some other" option and make a case for your favorite in the comments. As the note below all Slashdot polls warns, "This whole thing is wildly inaccurate. Rounding errors, ballot stuffers, dynamic IPs, firewalls. If you're using these numbers to do anything important, you're insane." So we'll take the results with a grain of salt ("advisory") — but as of this writing, four of the options are between 13 and 16 percent, which gives us an idea that it's working pretty well.

    I couldn't possibly pick a best one. There were at least four that stand out as being really top notch. And in things like art, I don't know how one evaluates on a linear scale.

    I liked the logos changing. I don't like the whole voting on the best thing.

    I'll probably get flamed, but I kind of like it when some things that have reached a fairly high level of developmental maturity don't get dramatically changed. Slashdot, even when it went a little higher tech, still didn't get dramatically changed from the way it's been for years and years. I actually appreciate that when change doesn't seem to actually improve the purpose.

      • I especially liked the very last one, which wasn't even the right fucking colour.
        • Replying to my own post, but it seems the majority of the entries are in the lighter green shown by the Oct 31st logo. What gives? It looked out of place at the time, and if it wasn't for the background on the entries page being lighter than the heading on the site, it would still look weird.
      • Animated GIF logos are awsome! I'm sure I had one on my Geocities page I made when I was 13. Although, I probably made it in Photoshop since it was on the schools Macs and GIMP wasn't yet the fine piece of user friendly software it is today.

        I also find blinking crap on my monitor to be annoying. If an ad blinks or beeps then I permanently block the the site that served it. I deal with these Slashdot gifs by keeping an extra window on my screen and sliding it over the gif to cover it. But then every time I click or scroll the browser I need to put that window back on front. Is there a Firefox option to disable animated gifs?

      • Yep. As long as we don't get any of that animated crap I'll be happy, especially if we just keep the same logo. I don't want to diss the artists, mostly the animated ones were good but I can't stand it on a website.

        Amen ad infinitum. And if they must be animated, they must not repeat. And frankly, there's no need for it to be animated anywhere but the frontpage. At least, please pretty please, make the animation a config option. I hate having to tweak my browser everywhere I go just not to be annoyed.

      I like the current logo too, but a temporary change like this is just good fun.

      Should it be a Google doodle every single day, or on holidays, or on every /. editor's birthday? No, because that's a different style. Leave that to Google. But once in a great while to celebrate a special occasion (or meaningless milestone [tvtropes.org]), it's fine.

      You mean improve like supporting Unicode. Or even carriage returns with HTML editing off. Or an open source drop in rich text editor.

        y'know, I'm good without there being rich text editors on forums, even if the forum can display rich text. Consider that it's rare that people who actually know how to manually markup for bold or italics or different fonts will abuse it, while when it's simple so everyone can do it then one finds someone picking the Script font, italicizing and bolding it, and changing the color the fuscia for all their posts.

        Keep it simple. If I feel a need to italicize or bold or underline I can do it with these pret

      i don't think anyone suggested or implied that the logo would switch (but boy, did some people infer it)
      Nothing wrong with changing the look for a bit, look at how successful Google Doodles are. I've enjoyed the logo contest, and seeing some of the creative ideas. Of course I don't want the logo to CHANGE to one of them. But nothing wrong with changing the logo for a day every now and then.

    There are maybe 3 that are halfway decent outside of a cutesy joke.

    No offense to the creators, but they should feel bad.

    How about a page that shows them all next to each other? That would probably help the vast majority of people in voting.

    I guess I would throw it back to the slashdot team and ask, what is it you hope to achieve with rebranding? Why a new logo? Is it merely to commemorate the history of slashdot? If so, I'd say you've already done that with the month-long logo fun.

    Rebranding is done for a number of reasons. Historical milestone isn't typically one of them. It's sometimes used as an excuse for "We haven't grown our user base for a while and need something fresh to entice more visitors", but the event alone isn't usually enough. This is generally true because if you are happy with your growth and retention, don't mess with it.

    If you aren't happy with growth or retention, that could be due to any number of factors and a new logo isn't likely to fix it. Knowing who the target demographic is would be the key to rebranding. But I advise extraordinary caution. Slashdot is old-guard when it comes to the internet, an institution really. An unchanging logo conveys stability and reliability. It also helps smooth transitions to other changes you may make in the future with respect to appearance, functionality, or content.

      Hi!

      Not to say that there might not be design changes down the road, but the month of October really was its own special snowflake :) We tried to make that clear in the way the initial call for entries was phrased, and in the story to which you're responding, but quite a few people evidently have the same confusion -- sorry about that. This was a chance to let readers get their name and creativity on the site in a way other than the usual story / poll submissions, not an attempt at long-term rebranding.

      Some of the logos submitted were great, and perhaps one day we'll either want to use them or be inspired by them, but we're back as planned, and for the currently-anticipated future, to the old, regular Slashdot logo.

  • On the voting page, you should post the logos. How else can you decide, unless all you care about it who the author is?
    • The poll was outsourced to the Onion? After clicking the five links in the story, I wondered if this was the start of a new Halloween tradition. I expected the checkbox would move out of the way of the mouse when I voted. Laugh out loud bad.

  • Are you *seriously* inviting people to vote on logos you aren't showing them?!?! Why on Earth are they not displayed on the survey/ballot?

  • The current homepage shows the normal logo with a blurb about entering the contest for October. Is that next October?

    It was aesthetically pleasing, fit well with the themes of the site, and was a clever and equally valid way of writing the official logo (after all, it was just a translation from one encoding scheme to another).

    The mystery didn't hurt either, even if I was too thick to figure it out :)
